Overview

Product Story ("we", "our", or "the app") is a Shopify application that helps merchants create rich product story sections for their Shopify stores. This privacy policy explains what data we collect, how we use it, and the rights you have over your information.

By installing and using Product Story, you agree to the practices described in this policy. If you do not agree, please uninstall the app.

Product Story does not collect, store, or process any data belonging to your customers (shoppers). All data we handle belongs to you, the merchant.

Data We Collect

When you install Product Story, Shopify grants us access to your store through OAuth. The data we access is limited to what is necessary to operate the app.

Template data you create

All template and settings data is stored directly inside your Shopify store as metaobjects and metafields — not on our servers. We do not maintain a copy of your templates.

How We Use Data

We use the data we access solely to operate the app:

Authenticate your session and verify your store identity
Read and write product story templates to your store's metaobjects
Generate AI-powered content using your product data (only when you explicitly trigger it)
Read your theme settings to apply matching colors and fonts to templates
Process Shopify billing for paid plan subscriptions

We do not sell your data, use it for advertising, or share it with any party not listed in this policy.

Third-Party Services

Product Story relies on the following third-party services to operate:

Shopify

Platform provider

All app data flows through Shopify's APIs. Shopify's own privacy policy applies to data stored in your store.

Google Gemini AI

AI content generation

When you choose to auto-fill template content with AI, your product title, description, and category are sent to Google Gemini to generate copy. This data is used solely for that request and is not stored or used to train models under standard API terms.

Railway

Application hosting

The app server is hosted on Railway. Request logs may be retained for up to 30 days for debugging purposes. Railway does not have access to your Shopify store data.

AI content generation is optional. If you do not use the "Auto-fill with AI" feature, no product data is ever sent to Google Gemini.

Data Storage & Retention

Product Story does not operate an external database. Your template and settings data lives entirely within your Shopify store as app-owned metaobjects and metafields.

When you uninstall the app

Shopify automatically removes all app-owned metaobjects and metafields from your store when you uninstall Product Story. No manual data deletion request is required. Your product pages will revert to their default appearance.

Server logs

Application server logs (hosted on Railway) may contain your shop domain and anonymised request metadata. These are retained for up to 30 days and are used only for debugging and error monitoring.

Your Rights

As a merchant using Product Story, you have the right to:

Access the data stored by the app — all template data is visible in your Shopify Admin under Metaobjects
Delete your data at any time by uninstalling the app or deleting individual templates within the editor
Request a copy of any data we hold about you by contacting us at the email below
Opt out of AI content generation — the feature is opt-in and can be left unchecked at template creation

GDPR (European Union)

Product Story processes merchant data on the legal basis of contract performance — the data is necessary to deliver the service you have subscribed to. We do not process personal data of your customers. If you are subject to GDPR and have questions about our data handling, contact us at the address below.

We handle Shopify's mandatory GDPR compliance webhooks:

customers/data_request— We hold no customer PII; we acknowledge receipt and take no further action.
customers/redact— We hold no customer PII; we acknowledge receipt and take no further action.
shop/redact— All app data is stored in Shopify metaobjects which Shopify removes automatically on uninstall.

CCPA (California)

We do not sell personal information. California residents have the right to know what personal information is collected about them and to request deletion. As noted above, we do not store customer data. Merchant data can be deleted by uninstalling the app.
